More News: National Scientific Societies on Maritime Health

The Spanish Society of Maritime Medicine (Sociedad Española de Medicina Marítima - SEMM) was established in 1989.

The Danish Maritime Health Association (Dansk Selskab for Maritim Medicin - DSMM) was established in 2000.

The French Society of Maritime Medicine (Société Française de Médecine Maritime - SFMM) was founded on January 24th, 2001.

The Norwegian Society of Maritime Medicine (Norsk Forening for Sjøfartsmedisin).

There are also other national associations on maritime health, as soon as they contact us, if they want we'll insert a link to their webpage and we will include them in the list. In Europe the first one was founded in Italy "Società Italiana di Medicina del Mare" (SIMM), the most recent ones were founded in Indonesia and Vietnam (2004). In USA there is an association related to cruise medicine inside the American College of Emergency Physicians (Section of Cruise Ship and Maritime Medicine - 1990). It also exists a Cruise Line International Medical Association (CLIMA). There are other related to other subjects like the Undersea and Hyperbaric Medicine Society (UHMS), International Society of Travel Medicine ... and associations which we will add more information in the future like the one in Holland, in Gernany "Deutsche Gesellschaft für Maritime Medizin", others in Spain (Sociedad Española de Sanidad Naval - 1994, Sociedad Española de Medicina Subacuática e Hiperbárica - 2001) and so on. Journals and courses related to Maritime Health

International Maritime Health Int Marit Health ISSN: 1641-9251. It started with this name in 1999, Publisher: Instytut Medycyny Morskiej i Tropikalnej w Gdyni (Poland), Language: English. It continues the Bulletin of the Institute of Maritime and Tropical Medicine in Gdynia [Bull Inst Marit Trop Med Gdynia ISSN: 0324-8542 (1975-1998)] that continues the Biuletyn Instytutu Medycyny Morskiej w Gda´nsku (1957-1974) that continues the Bulletin of the State Institute of Marine and Tropical Medicine in Gda´nsk (1950-1956), one of the oldest still active maritime medicine journals in Europe (Although it was a Rivista maritima, Riv Maritt ISSN: 0035-6964 indexed in Medline published in 1868 in Italian and another one Rivista di medicina aeronautica from 1938-1958 et spaziale till 1992). Actually only one issue per year. Indexed in CIS and Medline.

Medicina Marítima (Maritime Medicine Journal) Med Marit ISSN: 1136 - 6532. Published by the Sociedad Española de Medicina Marítima - SEMM from 1995, two issues per year. Contents index can be consulted via internet, all titles and abstracts are in English and you can ask by mail for free full articles in pdf. Languages accepted Spanish, English and French (according to the author wish but allways with a translation into Spanish). Indexed in the "Biblioteca Nacional de Ciencias de la Salud I. Carlos III in the data base IBECS (Indice Bibliográfico Español en Ciencias de la Salud) and in ILO, Centro Internacional de Información sobre Seguridad y Salud en el Trabajo (CIS) data base CISDOC.

Other Journals and publications: CIRM (Fondazione Centro Internationale Radio Medico) Research (1997), Chinese Journal of Nautical Medicine (Ed. Chinese Medical Association), SEMPOS (The Seamen’s Insurance Foundation) with a Japanese Journal of Maritime Medicine and a research program since 1958.

- Courses for health staff on Maritime Health:

  • In Gdynia (Poland) - sponsorized by WHO (the first, third and fourth edition) & by IMHA (the second one, 1999) - four " Intercountry Training Courses on Maritime Occupational Health" took place till 2004. Those interested contact Dr. S. Tomaszunas, E-mail : tomasz@amg.gda.pl
  • The University of Western Brittany has created since 1997 a diploma of maritime medicine. This diploma is meant for physicians who need a specific knowledge in the maritime field. It particulary aims at medical doctors having to practice on board seagoing ships, trawlers , oceanographic and scientific vessels. At the time, it brings complementary knowledge to occupational medicine doctors working in the maritime industry or administration. It also aims at the coastal emergency mobile units’ physicians and navy surgeons. This diploma consists of five modules taught during three weeks a year. This year it has been implemented with an emergency modul of 120 hours. Any medical doctor or PhD can apply. Contact : Professor Jean-Dominique Dewitte C.H.U.   • An University postgrade course especialist on Maritime Health,  first edition was running in Spanish (Nov.2003 - June 2004, download the programme - organised by the University Rovira and Virgili of Tarragona (Spain) - Now a second edition to begin in Nov. 2005 (you can download the programme in Spanish and English) has been approved (140 virtual hours + 60 practical ones that admit 8th ISMH activities, IMHA workshops and seminars convalidations + a research work). If we receive enough forms of interest for the English version, the modules will be opened one by one in English, too. The first one to be opened in 12-2005 will be the module of medical care on board with special relation to telemedicine. Those interested can fullfil an application form or contact by e-mailLink to the URV University for registration.

    Projects

    - ITF projects, IMHA is working in the draft of the next 3rd. edition of the International Medical Guide for Ships, in 8 specific projects for which we have received a grant (3 years programme, look for specific information in IMHA Newsletter) and with ICSW in the SHIP project.

    - Medine Network, IMHA is one of its partners, EC Erasmus project related to education ECTC credits etc. Next meeting 6-5-05. Contact person: Dr. TL. Jones from Bristol University, UK.

    - Medmar Project, an invitation to international collaboration, coordinator Dr.D. Jegaden, this project was presented last year, 2004, the EC thematic network Socrates-Erasmus 3 indicated that we succeeded the first evaluation for interest. In Feb. 2005 we have asked other partners to join and had a meeting in Brussels for the economic part, we are waiting for its approval by the end of July, 2005. Just as a short reminder about the objectives of this European Project Medmar “Post-university education in maritime medicine in Europe” where some scientific societies and several European universities had already included its name: UBO Brest-France, IMHA, EMA, URV Tarragona-Spain, SDU Esbjerg- Denmark, MIMMiT Gdansk-Poland, SFMM-France, SEMM-Spain, DGMM-Germany, AUTH Thessalonikii-Greece, Trieste-Italy, Constanza- Rumania, GU Göteborg-Sweeden, UNICAM Camerino–Italy, CIRM Rome-Italy, TTL Helsinki, Turku-Finland, Antwerp Maritime Academy-Belgium, Bonn MED ID-Germany, KU Klaipeda (Lithuania), MEDET Mersine -Turkey, IMNSSA Toulon-France, ULL Tenerife-Spain, Msida-Malta, MU Sofia-Bulgaria and associated institutions like Rijeka U.-Croatia, MI Leeuwarden-The Netherlands, University of Plymouth (UK) etc . Let's remind that the estimated duration will be 36 months. Main objectives are: to define main competences for maritime medicine (medical examinations, on board medicine, medical care and emergencies, radio-medical advice ...), data bases in maritime health, and common contents in the training of maritime medicine in Europe (European master).

    - Project of a network of EU port health authorities, an invitation to international collaboration, coordinator Dr. Bauer (click his e-mail), he tries to present this project and gives the interested collaborators a deadline to show their interest (15.4.05). IHMA had already organised a workshop about this subject in Barcelona, nov. 2002; it would be good to have a group working in it.     - Sarrrah Project, an invitation to international collaboration, link suggested by Dr.Wolfgang Baumeier, follow... Sarrrah project (accidental hypothermia and medical management of maritime desasters).

    - International Surveillance of Seafarers Health and Working Environment, a Danish invitation to international collaboration. ITF Seafarer's Trust sponsorship. This project was presented in the 5th ISMH in London, from October 1999 pilot questionnaires have been collected by each participant, a new stage began in January 2001.     University of Southern Denmark

    - Internet refresher course on first aid and maritime health on board, from the Spanish Society of Maritime Medicine; it was supported by IMHA and ITF Seafarer's Trust for its translation into English; this course is open to international collaboration to update some of the subjects.
