|The Spanish Society of Maritime Medicine (SEMM) was founded in 1989. Its former name was 'Asociación Médica Española de Sanidad Marítima'. The main objectives of this non profit scientific society are continuing education and to improve research on Maritime Health. That's to say, to look basically into fishermen and merchant seafarers medical attendance and prevention on board and ashore and besides other subjects related to Maritime Medicine such as travel medicine, telemedicine, international relations, diving medicine and so on.|
INTERNATIONAL MARITIME MEDICINE
The 5th. International Symposium on
Maritime Health (ISMH) was hold in United Kingdom (London,
8th-12th May, 1999), there, Spain was selected to hold the 7th. one in 2003, after the 6th ISMH of Manila (November, 2001, The Philippines). Main subjects of these Symposiums are related to
research and technological progress in Maritime Medicine,
such as telemedicine, internet communication, prevention,
medical attendance, psychosocial matters on board,
maritime medicine on harbour, cruise medicine etc. You can visit the webpage of the 7th ISMH held in Spain, organised by the Spanish Society of Maritime Medicine (SEMM) & the 'International Maritime
Health Association' (IMHA) and the 8th ISMH that was organised in Rijeka (Croatia, 7-14th May 2005). Denmark has begun to prepare the 9th ISMH for 2007 (3-6 June Esberjk).

SEMM continuing education and
activities: Our last 16th anual meeting was the VII National Congress on Maritime Health (Sta. Cruz de Tenerife, 27-31 Oct 2006). We are preparing our next XVII meeting, this time in collaboration of the SFMM "The 1st Hispano-francophone International Congress on Maritime Medicine" (Brest, 11-13th Oct, 2007; in French and Spanish but with an IMHA workshop in English the 13th) Subscriptions and deadline for abstracts presentation opened. on Maritime Medicine in
Gijón, 17th-19th September 1999 (X years of meetings
organized by SEMM). SEMM recommends and support the postgraduate course "University specialist on Maritime Health" organised by the URV foundation (it can be followed by internet, from Nov. 2005 there is an English version, consult more information in the first link, subscription is also opened by modules). The Danish Maritime Health Association (Dansk Selskab for Maritim Medicin - DSMM) was established in 2000 and the French Society of Maritime Medicine (Société Française de Médecine Maritime - SFMM) on january 24, 2001.
